From his wife's perspective...

August 9th, 2006 at 07:11 am

I thought I'd let you know how this has been going from a woman's point of view. One of the things I've been doing to help cut back on costs has been the one car. We had to get a new car because our last one blew a head gasket. So we thought about it and decided that instead of getting a car now and then a second one for me we'd just buy one and share. The total payment and insurance comes to about 300.00 a month. A whole lot easier to swallow than the 600.00 + we were paying for Scott's car he had when we first started dating.Smile I also started buying my make-up when it's on sale and getting an extra one instead of paying full price at seperate times. But the biggest thing I've done is changing my hair. For years I've been coloring my hair dark brown so I dyed it back to my natural blonde. It will save about 100.00 every 6-8 weeks.

Ladies, what have you done to cut down beauty costs?

Well I have stopped buying clothes for myself unless I get them on the sales. I also had a friend make me a few outfits that cost me about 15 pounds in total. I never buy makeup because my hubby doesn't like the stuff.. however I am tempted to buy a christmas makeup gift set at 70% off. Which seems like good value to me. This is from a girl who used to shop on sunset and rodeo in LA.
I stopped getting really expensive haircuts not to save money but because I couldn't find anyone in the Uk I felt did hair properly. (again a case of being spoiled rotton by hairdressers to the stars). I now pay a girl £15 to come by the house and give me a clean and nice looking cut. If I colour my hair for £35 .. I wait about 4 months before my next colour and cut because I cover my hair as a muslim and only my husband sees the roots.
I always try to cook so we don't order fast food!
I've been turning the lights off!
I look through the internet to find ways we can save!
I call up places looking for the best prices on plumbers.. ectr.
I scour stores looking for the best value for money on items we only absolutely need!
Gosh what would my husband do without me??
I try to hang dry the clothes which requires more ironing than taking them to the laundry mat to dry.

He is definately a blessed man...

Haven't paid for a haircut in years. I wear it long and casual, so when it needs a trim, SO or mom does it for me.

I use lots of freebies from this site to cut down on purchases of things like shampoo, lotions, conditioners and makeup.

I have colored my own hair for about $5 every 2 months. I trim my own hair, and spend less than $30 a year on makeup.

I don't use makeup anymore except on special occassions and then usually just a colored gloss and maybe some clear mascara. A touch of concealer but I rarely need it as I stay away from sugar, so my skin stays pretty clear.

I only get my hair trimmed twice a year. I am growing it long as the fussy cuts I used to get had to be done too frequently and took too long to fix. I color my own hair, but just front area where it is grey (the wonderful family skunk stripe!). I can make a bottle of color last awhile that way. (They say you aren't supposed to save it, but I do, just keep it uncapped so pressure doesn't build up and keep it in a container that will catch a spill if pressure does build up.) I use a color that matches my own natural auburn-red.

I get the $1 bottle of nail polish, but I only wear it in the warm season. Or on special occassions in the cold season.

I get my hair cut only about every 3 months and I don't blow dry my hair or use any gel or mousse. Occasionally, I use hair spray, but only in the winter when my hair is full of static. Except for lip balm, facial cleanser, and astringent, I don't buy facial products, as they only make my face break out. I don't like putting polish on my nails. This saves me a lot of money. It may sound kind of weird, but I also drink a lot of water, around 3 quarts a day. It helps my skin stay softer, which means I don't need to use as much lotion. I generally only buy clothes at thrift stores or on sale at JC Penney or some place like that when things are about 50% off. There is a church where I live that hosts an annual giveaway of everything they could not sell at yard sales. I always go and have gotten some really excellent stuff. I do give them about $5.00, because I walk out with a grocery bag full of clothes that would likely cost hundreds brand new. I also walk to work which is about 3 blocks from where I live. It gives me a little exercise and I don't have to worry about cleaning snow/ice off the car, finding a place to park, or paying $50.00 a year to park at my work. Just my $.02.
